Emergency Heat Relief Fund Needs Gifts

Letter From Lesley - April 2012

It’s only April, but the Dallas County Department of Health and Human Services already is preparing for summer’s heat. The searing temperatures of June, July and August can be deadly for elderly and disabled residents without working air-conditioning.

For several years, The Dallas Foundation and other local foundations have teamed up to buy window air conditioners for our county’s vulnerable residents. Department of Health and Human Services employees accept referrals and requests for the heat relief program, screen them, then recommend households for a free window unit. County employees install the air conditioners, on their own time, free of charge.

County officials like to have a supply of window units on hand so they’re ready to go when temperatures spike. That’s why they’re soliciting donations now to the Emergency Heat Relief Fund.
