THE TAD ADOUE FUND

The Tad Adoue Fund of The Dallas Foundation is a special "field of interest" fund, named for the donor who created it. It awards a major grant each year to a Dallas arts organization.

Jean Baptiste "Tad" Adoue III was born in Dallas in 1910 to a locally prominent family. His grandfather founded the National Bank of Commerce (now Comerica Bank), and his father, Jean Baptiste Adoue II, was a Dallas mayor in the 1940s. Tad Adoue attended North Dallas High School, the University of Texas and Southern Methodist University School of Law. He was a Navy lieutenant during World War II.

Tad Adoue also built a long and distinguished career in arts and entertainment. He helped Dallas' legendary actress-director Margo Jones establish Theatre '47. He was a great supporter of new talent and sponsored many young performers in dance, opera, musical comedy, theater, classical music, film and the visual arts. He is credited with discovering the playwrights Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee, and their play Inherit the Wind.

In his will, Tad Adoue established a fund at The Dallas Foundation to support the arts. The income from his bequest helps a wide range of arts causes, including local theater, opera and the visual arts. His fund, together with The Henry Moore Foundation of England and the City of Dallas, underwrote the 1996 restoration of the Moore sculpture, The Dallas Piece, in front of City Hall. This walking tour is also part of his legacy as a patron and a champion of the arts in Dallas
