Donald Fowler Theater Arts Memorial Fund of The Dallas Foundation Announces Holly Doubet Musical as Inaugural Grant Recipient

DALLAS, TEXAS, April 30, 2021 – The Donald Fowler Theater Arts Memorial Fund of The Dallas Foundation announced today that Holly Doubet and her new musical 38 Minutes has been selected for its 2021 Grant Award.

Created following the unexpected death of Dallas theater artist Donald Fowler in May 2020, the Fund aims to provide annual support in the form of seed grants to artists living in the Dallas Metroplex to support the creation of new works of theater, plays, or musicals. The 2021 grant in the amount of $5,000 assists with early costs of individual theatrical creation.

38 Minutes was inspired by the personal experiences of Holly Doubet and the stories of others arising from a January 2018 emergency alert issued in Hawaii warning citizens and visitors: “BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.” Chaos ensued until 38 minutes later a second alert was released advising that the prior announcement had been a false alarm. The musical follows the timelines of various characters who experience the shock and panic that occurred on that life-altering day. Ms. Doubet is the conceptor, composer and co-book writer for the project, along with Kathy Babylon and John Vestor, music and lyrics co-writers, and Joe McDonough, book co-writer.

Grant recipient Holly Doubet stated: “I am so deeply honored and overjoyed to be the recipient of the Donald Fowler Memorial Grant. I did not have the opportunity to meet Donald, but I have read about him and know I would have loved him as much as so many did. It is a privilege to represent his creative, enthusiastic, and inspired memory with my new musical 38 Minutes. Many, many thanks to the Foundation for this meaningful acknowledgement, and for the connection to Donald Fowler’s impactful, well-lived life.”

The Fund will open the application process for a new grant cycle in January 2022, with the next grant recipient to be announced in Spring 2022.
