Partners for Progress: Pasos for Oak Cliff

Pasos for Oak Cliff is a Dallas nonprofit reimagining educational access through creativity, community, and compassion. Founded in 2020 by educators and sneaker enthusiasts Jesse Acosta and Alejandra Zendejas, Pasos builds confidence and academic momentum for students in Oak Cliff by addressing a simple—but impactful—barrier: footwear. For many children, a new pair of sneakers is more than something to wear. It is a symbol of dignity, belonging, and the chance to walk confidently into the classroom.

Sneakers, Scholarships, and STEAM Learning

Through sneaker drives, the Pasos All Stars Enrichment Program, and scholarship support, Pasos helps students put their best foot forward—literally and figuratively. New sneakers reduce discomfort, curb bullying, and elevate self-esteem. In addition, the sneaker-themed STEAM enrichment program blends literacy and math instruction with hands-on design and problem-solving. As a result, students who once struggled with engagement now learn through creativity and culture. They strengthen their academic foundation while having fun. Scholarships for first-generation college students extend this support even further. These awards open doors to higher education and create pathways for long-term success.

Reflecting on Pasos’ impact, Julie Diaz, President and CEO of The Dallas Foundation, explained that the organization “embodies creativity, community care, and educational equity,” adding that “their innovative, student-centered approach is exactly the kind of forward-looking work we are proud to support.”

Rooted in Community, Focused on Equity

Pasos’ approach grows from local understanding. As teachers and sneakerheads, the founders saw that students with worn shoes often faced ridicule or isolation. They turned that insight into purpose. What began as a sneaker drive has grown into a movement that partners with schools, community groups, and volunteers across Oak Cliff. Moreover, by pairing sneakers with enrichment programs and mentorship, Pasos addresses both immediate needs and long-term opportunity.

At The Dallas Foundation, we are honored to support Pasos for Oak Cliff in cultivating academic confidence, emotional resilience, and brighter futures for students. Together, we are enabling young people to move forward—one step at a time.
