Education has shaped the lives of Bobby Bisor and Jim Reis for decades. Each benefited from academic scholarships that opened doors to opportunity. Those experiences showed them how powerful access to education can be. They carried that understanding into their philanthropy.
As fundholders at The Dallas Foundation, Bobby and Jim wanted to give with purpose. They sought partners who shared their belief in education as a catalyst for lasting change. With guidance from The Dallas Foundation, they began exploring how their giving could create meaningful pathways for future generations.
Shifting Focus Upstream
At first, Bobby and Jim planned to fund scholarships for high school seniors. As they learned more about education and poverty in Dallas, their perspective shifted. Strong outcomes, they realized, start much earlier in a child’s life.
Through conversations with community members, nonprofit leaders, and The Dallas Foundation team, they saw the value of investing upstream. The path to higher education begins long before graduation day.
Together with The Dallas Foundation, they aligned the resources of the Reis-Bisor Foundation toward organizations serving children and youth. They prioritized programs that spark curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning at an early age.
Moving Beyond Silos
Bobby and Jim view philanthropy as a shared effort. They believe progress happens faster when donors work together.
“We think real change happens when funders move out of silos and into collaboration,” they shared. “Listening matters. Learning matters. Solutions work best when they respect the people closest to the challenge.”
That mindset led them to support organizations such as Commit Partnership and Texas 2036. These groups work with policymakers to align educational promise with practical resources. Bobby and Jim support efforts that connect programs, policy, and systems. Their goal is a durable structure that supports every student.
A Spark of Success at Beacon Hill
Beacon Hill Preparatory stood out as a natural fit for their vision. The organization provides in-school tutoring that strengthens comprehension and retention. Its approach blends academic rigor with encouragement and joy.
Charnella Derry, President and Founder of Beacon Hill, emphasizes the importance of partnership. “Beacon Hill cannot achieve its mission alone,” she said. “We collaborate with school districts, churches, and committed fundholders like Bobby and Jim. Together, we surround students with support.”
The results reinforce that approach. “The data is clear about the importance of reading on grade level by third grade,” Bobby said. “When you pair that with joy in learning, the impact grows.”
The Lasting Impact of the Reis-Bisor Foundation
Over time, Bobby and Jim have built a strategy that balances evidence with human connection. They value outcomes, but they also value moments of transformation. With support from The Dallas Foundation, they continue to refine their giving as their vision evolves.
Their investment in Beacon Hill’s strategic plan will expand the organization’s reach. It will also strengthen support for families across North Texas.
For Jim, the impact feels personal. “When you walk into a Beacon Hill learning lab, you see it immediately,” he said. “You see confidence growing. You see possibility. That spark can change a student’s life, a family’s future, and an entire community.”
