At The Dallas Foundation, we believe lasting community impact begins with understanding the many factors that shape a person’s ability to thrive. For families facing barriers to healthcare, nutritious food, mental health support, or financial stability, addressing one need often means addressing several at once.
That’s why we are proud to partner with Brother Bill’s Helping Hand, a longtime community resource serving families across West Dallas and surrounding neighborhoods. Through healthcare, food access, mental health services, education, and other programs, Brother Bill’s meets people where they are and helps connect them to the resources they need to build healthier, more stable lives.
The Challenge: When Health and Stability Intersect
For many families, staying healthy can be difficult when other basic needs are uncertain.
Access to a primary care provider may be limited. Nutritious food may be difficult to afford. Chronic conditions may go unmanaged. And when individuals are also navigating grief, stress, or financial hardship, finding the time and resources to address their health can become even more challenging.
These barriers can reinforce one another. Food insecurity can contribute to chronic health conditions, while health challenges can make it more difficult for individuals to work, care for their families, or maintain financial stability.
Creating healthier communities therefore requires an approach that looks beyond a single diagnosis or immediate need.
A Community-Centered Approach
Brother Bill’s Helping Hand takes a holistic, community-centered approach to supporting individuals and families across West Dallas and surrounding neighborhoods. The organization brings together healthcare, mental health support, food access, health education, and other resources to address the interconnected factors that shape a family’s ability to thrive.
Through its Community Health Clinic, Brother Bill’s provides accessible primary and preventive healthcare, while mental health programming offers individuals and families support close to home. Programs like ProduceRX connect fresh food, nutrition education, and chronic disease management, helping participants address both immediate needs and the underlying factors that can affect long-term health.
The impact of this approach is measurable. During a recent grant period, Brother Bill’s provided primary and preventive healthcare to 1,244 individuals and mental health support to 197 people. Its health and chronic disease programming engaged 558 individuals, while more than 15,000 patient contacts were made through its digital health platforms.
By bringing these services together under one organization, Brother Bill’s helps families access the care, resources, and support they need in the communities where they live.
Our Collaboration
The Dallas Foundation’s partnership with Brother Bill’s Helping Hand dates back to 1997.
Together with our fundholders, we have awarded more than $369,000 in support of the organization’s work. The Dallas Foundation has provided $153,850 directly through Field of Interest funds, including support from the Ratliff and J.J. “Book” Wilson funds, with an additional $20,000 awarded during this summer’s grant cycle.
Our support has included investments in community-centered healthcare as well as $15,000 in emergency SNAP relief, helping respond to immediate food-access needs for families in the community.
By connecting philanthropic resources with trusted local expertise, we can help address both urgent challenges and the conditions that influence long-term health and stability.
