Family Volunteerism

As Family Volunteerism Surges Nationwide, Rising GEN Members Celebrate with The Birthday Party Project

The Growing Trend of Family Volunteerism

Across the nation, more families are discovering the rewarding experience of volunteering together. In fact, according to the Volunteering and Civic Life in America report from AmeriCorps, 37% of parents with children under 18 participated in formal family volunteerism activities in 2023 — an increase that reflects a nationwide trend toward family service.

As more families seek ways to connect with causes, the benefits extend beyond the community. Volunteering together strengthens family bonds, provides valuable lessons for children, and cultivates a lasting sense of social responsibility.

Creating Opportunities for Families to Serve Together

Recognizing this trend, The Dallas Foundation designed the Rising GENerosity program to help families not only volunteer but also build deeper, lasting relationships with the nonprofit community. Through Rising GEN, families are introduced to a range of nonprofits addressing pressing needs in the Dallas community—many of which they may not have encountered otherwise.

By connecting families directly with local causes, Rising GEN not only facilitates meaningful volunteer experiences but also cultivates a deeper understanding of community issues. It’s a program designed to inspire lifelong habits of giving and service—values that are critical to building a strong future for Dallas and beyond.

Rising GEN in Action: Partnering with The Birthday Party Project

Earlier this month—during National Volunteer Month—Rising GEN hosted a family volunteer day with The Birthday Party Project. This Dallas-based nonprofit brings joy to children experiencing homelessness through the magic of birthday celebrations.

Founded in 2012, The Birthday Party Project partners with shelters and transitional facilities to throw unforgettable parties for these children. Each party includes decorations, activities, cupcakes, and gifts—helping every child feel seen, valued, and celebrated.

The organization’s model meets a crucial but often overlooked need: joy and normalcy for kids facing extremely difficult circumstances. Since its founding, the organization has celebrated over 20,000 birthdays nationwide—building hope, confidence, and connection for vulnerable young people.

During this volunteer event, Rising GEN families shopped for gifts, wrapped presents, and filled “birthday in a bag” kits together. These shared moments created unforgettable memories for both children and parents alike.

“As a parent, I appreciate that Rising GEN encourages my children to see the world through a different lens,” said Colby Hanks Baer, a Rising GEN member. “Our experience with The Birthday Party Project opened our eyes to the needs of children experiencing homelessness.”

“We left feeling more connected to our community.”

Experiences like this reflect Rising GEN’s mission: to connect families with service opportunities that educate, inspire, and strengthen community ties. They also show that philanthropy can start at any age.

Shaping the Future of Philanthropy—One Family at a Time

“Rising GEN is not just about volunteering—it’s about investing in the future of philanthropy in Dallas,” said Mackenzie Causey, Director of Strategic Partnerships & Donor Engagement at The Dallas Foundation. “By engaging families early and connecting them with impactful nonprofits, we are creating lifelong advocates for our community.”

As family volunteerism continues to surge nationwide, The Dallas Foundation is proud to offer opportunities for families to serve, learn, and grow together. Through Rising GEN, today’s families are becoming tomorrow’s leaders in philanthropy—strengthening Dallas one volunteer experience at a time.
