Better Block

Partners for Progress: Better Block

Better Block Foundation is reimagining what public spaces can be—by getting communities to take the lead in creating them. Founded in Dallas, the nonprofit is now a 501(c)(3). It leads a 120-day placemaking process rooted in local input and collaboration. Residents, urbanists, business owners, and city officials test creative changes together. These include bike lanes, café seating, parklets, painted crosswalks, public art, and more. The goal is simple: show what’s possible and help make it permanent.

In Dallas, Better Block runs about ten full-scale projects each year. It often scales through “Better Block in a Box,” a portable kit with street furniture and design tools. The group also shares open-source tools like Wikiblock to empower grassroots placemaking around the world. This helps residents take ownership of public space—wherever they live.

Better Block’s impact goes beyond design. By prioritizing people over cars, the nonprofit strengthens the social fabric of neighborhoods. Its efforts raise civic engagement, reduce crime, improve health, and support local entrepreneurs.

The Dallas Foundation is proud to support this mission-driven work. Together, we help Dallas neighborhoods create spaces rooted in community voice and belonging.
